Director of Business Development

Overall Goal

The overall goal of the role can be summarized as follows:
  • In line with Art Basel overall strategy and vision, generate possibilities, analyze feasibility and business case for new business activities with a focus on new income, profit generation and development of the brand.
  • Provide recommendations and suggestions to the existing business units on how to optimize and monetize our offering differently.
  • Drive Art Basel new initiatives by identifying and developing new business opportunities and building and expanding the presence of the brand.
  • Responsible for the implementation of the global partnership strategy, for the development of new partnership opportunities and to develop the revenue streams associated.

Your challenge
Development/ New Revenue Streams
  • Analyze existing business initiatives and develop plans to either refocus these initiatives in line with the overall Art Basel strategy, find ways to develop them further and increase the revenue potential, or expand their scope and give a new strategic focus to these existing initiatives.
  • Develop a mid-term to long-term roadmap and strategy for the launch of new business Initiatives, focused on building Art Basel's commercial results, client satisfaction and brand development.
  • Evaluation of new revenue streams and implementation of a formal process for the presentation and validation of new business opportunities via detailed business plans in collaboration with Art Basel's leadership team.

Strategy Aspects & Consulting
  • Define and implement best practices that support the expansion of the business and the launch of new initiatives
  • Identify, research and prepare presentations and business cases for validation of new business opportunities: elaborate and present business plans covering all strategic, commercial, marketing, digital, risk and financials topics associated with each potential initiative.
  • Work closely with all Art Basel departments as well as MCH relevant support functions in the preparation of business plans linked to new business opportunities.
  • Management of external suppliers, agencies and consultants resulting in demonstrable return on Investment when supporting the definition and development of new business opportunities
  • Development of Business Plans based on your research and data driven analysis of the market

Know your Market/Competitors
  • Ongoing evaluation of emerging trends and initiatives coming from direct or indirect competitors, and evaluation of relevant trends in other industries.
  • Tracking market events and market shifts, which could have an impact on present or future business initiatives of Art Basel
  • Track and measure project performance regularly and report to Art Basel's Executive Committee.

Partnership Development Opportunities
  • Responsible for the partnership acquisition strategy for all existing and new initiatives.
  • Leading the Partnership department on a strategic level, as part of overall business-development strategy
  • Focus on achieving the full partnership potential across all current and future platforms
  • Build creative digital and physical partnership concepts beyond current activations.
  • Expand content monetization

Your profile

  • 10 years of professional experience in business development within the event industry or cultural field
  • Higher Education or University Degree in Business Administration or other relevant field
  • Entrepreneurial and business experience focused on creation of new business activities and their successful delivery to market
  • Large international business network
  • In-depth industry knowledge and passion for cultural and event industries
  • Experience in Commercial negotiations, including Sponsorships, Partnerships, Joint Ventures, Licence agreements etc.
  • Strong commercial skills and ability to identify and lead profitable initiatives
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Excellent language skills in English, any additional language is a plus
